SDP Chieftain: El-Rufai Not Registered Party Member

Idris Inuwa, the Northwest Assistant National Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has clarified that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, is not officially registered as a member of the party.

El-Rufai’s Departure from APC

On March 10, el-Rufai announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership. He stated that he had expressed concerns about the party’s direction but received no response, prompting him to explore alternative political platforms. Following his departure, he met with SDP National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, and other party leaders in Abuja, sparking speculations about his possible defection.

No Official Record of El-Rufai’s Membership

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna on Friday, Inuwa said that el-Rufai has not been registered at the ward or state level.

“We have received reports that Nasir el-Rufai and some others have joined the SDP, but the Kaduna North Local Government chapter and the Unguwar Sarki ward leadership have no official records confirming this,” Inuwa stated.

He emphasized that anyone seeking to join the party must follow due registration procedures.

“We advise el-Rufai and others interested in becoming members to adhere to the official membership process,” he added.

Controversy Over Kaduna SDP Leadership

Inuwa also criticized the SDP National Working Committee (NWC) for dissolving the Kaduna State Working Committee, stressing that while the party welcomes new members, they must follow constitutional guidelines for registration.
