Chijioke Ihunwo, the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, has accused Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, of ordering the closure of Oginigba Market.
According to Ihunwo, the closure was enforced by police officers, including CSP Mohammed of the Anti-Cultism Unit and CSP Masalachi of C41. He alleged that these officers invaded the market, using tear gas and live ammunition to intimidate traders and residents.
Speaking on Monday, Ihunwo criticized the police action, calling it an undue intrusion into local government matters and a violation of the Oginigba community’s rights.
“I received information about armed policemen taking over the Oginigba Market, which was reopened by the local government,” Ihunwo explained. “I contacted senior police officers, including the Commissioner of Police, to raise concerns about the situation.”
He condemned the police actions, saying:
“Why would officers storm the market, shooting and releasing tear gas on traders? It’s disheartening that the Nigeria Police Force is being manipulated by politicians intent on disrupting the peace in Rivers State.”
Ihunwo alleged that the market, which belongs to the Oginigba people, is being unfairly targeted. He emphasized that any land acquisition in the area must respect the rights of the local community.
While accusing Wike of directing the market’s closure, Ihunwo urged residents to remain calm as the local government pursues a lawful resolution. “We will address this matter through appropriate channels and ensure justice for the people of Oginigba,” he assured.
He also called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the officers involved and prevent further misuse of police authority. “These actions are creating unnecessary tension in our state. The Oginigba people deserve to trade in peace on their ancestral land,” Ihunwo stated.
Despite the challenges, Ihunwo reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the issue peacefully and safeguarding the interests of the community. He pledged to stand firm in protecting the rights of Oginigba residents amid the ongoing dispute.
