The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Friday met with the newly appointed Sole Administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The meeting was held behind closed doors after a brief open session.
The gathering came after several delays and was aimed at addressing the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
The federal lawmakers are stepping in after the political situation in the state worsened, leading to a breakdown in leadership.
Ibas, who was selected by President Bola Tinubu to take over as Sole Administrator under emergency rule, attended the meeting for the first time.
He explained to the committee that his absence in earlier sessions was due to the new nature of his role, and he asked for more time to fully prepare and adjust.
He also asked for cooperation as he begins his duties in the troubled state.
Shortly after his brief remarks, reporters were asked to leave as the meeting went into a private session, away from public view.
The federal government had stepped in after tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reached a boiling point.
As a result, the President suspended the governor, his deputy, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. This move led to the appointment of Ibas to take control of the state’s affairs.
The committee’s private meeting with Ibas is seen as part of the effort to bring order to the state and possibly lay the groundwork for a more stable political environment.
