The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has taken responsibility for the bomb blast that killed 26 people in Borno State on Monday.
In a statement posted on its Telegram channel on Tuesday, ISWAP confirmed its involvement in the deadly attack.
The explosion occurred when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), believed to have been planted by insurgents, went off under an Isuzu pickup truck traveling from Kala-Balge to Gamboru Ngala. The blast took place near Furunduma village around noon.
Borno State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the attack, stating that the explosion claimed the lives of 26 people, including 16 men, four women, and six children.
“The vehicle, registered as XA265KKU, detonated an IED near Furunduma village, resulting in the tragic loss of 26 lives,” Daso said.
He added that the driver and two other individuals were injured and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
This attack is the second major incident in the state in less than a month. Two weeks ago, a similar IED blast along the Maiduguri–Damboa Road killed eight people and injured 11 others when a Hummer bus hit an explosive device reportedly planted by Boko Haram militants.
In response, security forces have increased patrols and surveillance in the affected areas, while investigations into the recent bombings continue.
