Protest rocks Kano emirates over dethronement of Bayero as Emir

Supporters of Aminu Bayero, the dethroned Emir of Kano, have taken to the streets of the five emirates in protest.

The emirates are Bichi, Rano, Karaye, Kano and Gaya.

Bayero was deposed on Thursday after Abba Yusuf, the Kano governor, signed a new law that repealed the Emirate Council Law 2019.

The 2019 legislation balkanised the Kano emirate into the five jurisdictions and provided grounds for the dethronement of Sanusi in 2020.

Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano on Friday at a colourful event in government house.

Bayero returned to Kano in the early hours of Saturday and moved into a palace in Nassarawa LG. A detachment of soldiers are still keeping watch over the dethroned monarch.

Holding aloft banners and placards with sundry inscriptions, the protesters say they want Bayero reinstated.
