The Presidency has dismissed reports that President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
Viral claims circulating early Monday alleged that Yakubu had been removed and replaced with Professor Bashiru Olamilekan as part of a major shake-up in INEC’s leadership. The story quickly gained traction on social media.
However, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, described the report as fake and urged Nigerians to ignore it.
“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He clarified that any official announcement of that nature would come directly from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or another authorized channel.
“Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other official source,” he added.
As of now, there has been no confirmation from the Presidency or any federal agency regarding changes at INEC, and the circulating report remains unverified misinformation.
