Preferred 2023 Presidential Candidate: Tinubu, Obi divide G5 governors

The G5 governors in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently divided over the choice of presidential candidate they would support in the February 2023 general election, Starnews Nigeria has learnt.

It was confirmed that the Governors, Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuayi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) have taken a position to choose and announce their preferred presidential candidate in January 2023.

But a dependable source who hinted at Starnews Nigeria said on Saturday night that the governors were divided into two. According to him, three of them preferred Peter Obi of the Labour Party to Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling APC.

“The other two governors did not see Obi as a candidate that can beat. They preferred Tinubu to Obi on the account that Obi does not have the required political structure to win a presidential election in Nigeria”, the source told Starnews Nigeria in a telephone interview.

It would be recalled that Governor Wike and his allies have been calling for the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the party’s national chairman, citing that Ayu and Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, cannot come from the same region.

However, Ayu had insisted that he would not resign his position based on the demands of Wike’s allies.

Starnews Nigeria gathered that the Pro-Wike Governors have closed the window of reconciliation and now decided to choose one of the leading presidential candidates outside Atiku as their preferred candidate since Atiku and the PDP are not ready to yield their demands.
