A Nigerian Police inspector attached to the Imo State Government House has been found dead in his room, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased officer, identified as Inspector Ekele Peter, is from Ofante in Kogi State and was serving at the Imo Government House at the time of the incident.
According to a security source who spoke with Newsmen, Inspector Peter reportedly died on Tuesday, but his lifeless body was not discovered until Friday.
A video obtained by Newsmen shows the officer lying on the floor of his room, unclothed, while colleagues who later arrived at the scene were seen covering his body with a wrapper.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement on the cause of death or whether an investigation has commenced.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of deaths involving police officers. Newsmen recently reported that police authorities in Niger State detained several officers assigned to an internal arms audit following the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) under investigation for alleged illegal ammunition dealings.
In that case, DSP Abdullahi Isah, attached to Mopol 12 under the B Division Police Command in Minna, was arrested on suspicion of supplying ammunition to bandits. During a routine arms and ammunition audit by a team from Abuja, discrepancies involving firearms and ammunition were reportedly discovered.
Police authorities said Isah allegedly shot himself during the audit and died on the spot. Officers assigned to supervise the exercise were subsequently arrested for negligence.
While there is no official link between the two incidents, the death of Inspector Peter has further intensified public concern over safety, welfare, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
