Political Drama Unfolds: Onochie Challenges Tinubu’s Role in Buhari’s Rise

Lauretta Onochie, the former Special Assistant to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has made a bold claim that Nigeria’s current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, did not support Buhari’s rise as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014. Buhari, who served two terms from 2015 to 2023, became the APC’s first presidential candidate following the party’s formation from a merger of major political groups.

In a twist to the narrative, Boss Mustapha, who served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation under Buhari, declared that the APC capitalized on Buhari’s popularity to wrest power from the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), countering claims that Tinubu played a pivotal role in making him President. Mustapha emphasized that while the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) controlled only one state during the APC’s formation, it was the votes from Buhari’s supporters that secured their victory.

In response, Onochie took to her X account to share an article headline from the Nigerian Tribune stating, “Buhari’s popularity won 12.5 million votes for APC in 2014.” She praised Mustapha for dispelling what she called a “lie” about Buhari’s emergence, asserting that “every lie has an expiry date.” Onochie reiterated that Tinubu did not support Buhari’s candidacy in 2014, adding, “Fact.”
