Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II has been invited for questioning by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following an incident reported during the recent Sallah celebration held at the palace in Kano.
A letter dated April 4, addressed to the Emir and obtained by Peoples Gazette, directed him to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on April 8.
The invitation is linked to an event that reportedly took place in Sanusi’s jurisdiction during the festivities.
“The Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General, Force Intelligence Department (FID), has instructed that you attend an investigative session,” the letter stated.
The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the Force Intelligence Department, located opposite the Force Headquarters in Area 11, Abuja. According to the letter, the Emir’s presence is essential for the ongoing inquiry.
Although the nature of the incident has not been publicly disclosed, the development comes amid a lingering dispute over traditional leadership in Kano between Emir Sanusi and his cousin, Aminu Bayero.
Earlier this week, authorities canceled the annual Sallah Durbar in Kano, citing security risks.
In March, the Abuja Court of Appeal temporarily suspended the enforcement of a judgment that had validated the Kano State Government’s decision to repeal the 2019 Emirate Council Law.
The ruling effectively delayed Sanusi’s return as Emir, pending the outcome of an appeal at the Supreme Court.
