The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the mysterious disappearance of a newborn baby at a Primary Healthcare Centre in the Okeiyinmi area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
The baby, who was delivered around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, was discovered missing in the early hours of Monday. According to reports, the disappearance was noticed by a nurse on duty who went to attend to the child but found the baby gone.
Sources at the facility revealed that an unidentified woman, who had entered the ward under the guise of being a relative or fellow patient, fled with the baby around 4:00 a.m. The baby’s mother reportedly became friendly with the woman, believing they shared the same native language.
“The woman gave birth on Sunday night, and we noticed someone else in the ward with her. Because they were speaking the same language, the nurses assumed they were related,” a source explained. “Unfortunately, while the mother slept and the nurse stepped out, the strange woman took the baby away.”
The hospital’s security guard reportedly failed to stop the suspect, claiming he saw a heavily pregnant woman leaving the building, not realizing she had wrapped the newborn around her belly.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has ordered a full-scale investigation.
“The CP has directed the State CID to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the recovery of the baby. So far, four suspects have been arrested, including the mother, and they are giving us credible information that will aid the investigation,” he said.
Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing infant and bring those responsible to justice.
