The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), came hard on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of gross incompetence, anti-people policies, and a descent into what it described as creeping totalitarianism.
Rising from its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the PDP, in a communique read by its Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, lamented what it termed the “melancholic state of the nation” under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.

The NEC said it was deeply worried by the worsening insecurity across the country, including wanton killings, rampant cases of kidnapping, and the invasion of communities by terrorists, which it blamed on President Tinubu’s “apparent negligence and abdication” of his constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians.
According to the PDP, “The country is bleeding under the irredeemably exploitative, insensitive and anti-people APC administration. The state of insecurity has become alarming, with citizens now living in fear due to unchecked banditry, terrorism, and general lawlessness.”
The opposition party did not mince words in criticising the economic policies of the Tinubu administration, describing them as ill-advised and poorly implemented. The party cited the hike in fuel prices, electricity tariff increases, multiple taxes, and various arbitrary charges on services, all of which it said have worsened poverty, shut down millions of businesses, and triggered massive job losses nationwide.
“These policies have collapsed the productive sector, increased criminality, and imposed a general sense of hopelessness among Nigerians,” the PDP lamented.
The NEC further accused the government of promoting a culture of corruption and financial recklessness, pointing to what it termed policy inconsistencies, budget padding, diversion of public funds, and widespread treasury looting, all of which have reportedly deterred foreign investors and caused infrastructure decay.
“The nation’s economy is sinking under the weight of reckless spending and mismanagement,” the communique noted.
Expressing concerns over what it described as a plot by the APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, the PDP said it would resist all attempts to stifle the opposition, which it alleged include intimidation of opposition figures and institutions of democracy.
“It is obvious that the APC’s desperation is borne out of its fear of inevitable defeat in 2027 due to its failure to deliver on the promises made to Nigerians,” the NEC stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and democratic values, the PDP said the successful conduct of its 99th NEC meeting was a testament to its unity and resolve to reclaim power.
The NEC ratified the composition of both the National Convention Committee and the Zoning Committee ahead of its elective national convention slated for Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025.
The National Convention Committee will be chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, with Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Peter Mbah of Enugu serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary respectively.
For the Zoning Committee, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State will serve as Chairman, with Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, as Vice Chairman, and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, as Secretary.
On the issue of the National Secretary of the party, NEC acknowledged receipt of a resolution from the South East Zonal Executive. However, it resolved to consider the matter at its next meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.
Reassuring its members and Nigerians at large, the PDP stated emphatically that it remains united, resilient, and committed to rescuing the nation from what it described as the “vicious grip” of the APC.
“The PDP is more determined now than ever before to lead the charge in restoring hope and good governance in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
