Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed displeasure over an invitation extended to him by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to visit the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.
Through his spokesperson, Obasanjo criticized the invitation as lacking formal protocol and showing disregard for his office.
He pointed out that as of January 2, 2024, he had not received any official letter from the NNPCL inviting him to the facilities.
Obasanjo’s comments followed his earlier remarks during a television interview, where he expressed frustration over the ineffective management of the country’s refineries.
He recounted failed attempts to privatize them, including rejecting an offer from Aliko Dangote’s group to manage the refineries during his presidency, Vanguard reports.
According to Obasanjo, billions of dollars have been spent since 2007, yet no improvements have been made in refinery operations.
The NNPCL, however, maintained that the refineries were operational, claiming significant maintenance and upgrades had been completed to bring the facilities up to global standards.
The corporation reiterated its invitation to the former president to tour the refineries and observe the progress firsthand.
