The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has cautioned U.S. President Donald Trump against any attempt to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs under the pretext of protecting religious freedoms.
Reacting to Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution, SDP National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba warned that Nigeria’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s security challenges, the party insisted that foreign military intervention would be unacceptable. Instead, it urged the U.S. to provide intelligence and military support — similar to what it offers allies such as Israel, Egypt, and Pakistan — if it truly wants to help.
The SDP warned that any foreign invasion could trigger chaos similar to what followed U.S. interventions in Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan.
The party also urged President Bola Tinubu to focus on protecting citizens across religious and ethnic lines rather than being distracted by political considerations ahead of the 2027 elections.
