JUST IN: Lagos CP declares Sowore wanted for ‘public disturbance’

By: Sunday Ameh

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has declared Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, wanted over alleged public disturbance.

Jimoh made the announcement on Monday during a security briefing at the Oworonshoki community, where he accused Sowore of “coming to Lagos to incite unrest” in connection with the ongoing demolition of buildings in the area.

“The command has declared Omoyele Sowore wanted for orchestrating actions capable of disrupting public peace,” the police commissioner said. “We will not allow any individual, no matter their status, to cause chaos under the guise of activism.”

His comments come shortly after officers of the Lagos State Police Command fired teargas to disperse protesters demonstrating against the demolition of structures in Oworonshoki by the state government.

The demolitions, which authorities say target illegal constructions on waterways and setbacks, have triggered outrage among affected residents, prompting protests and heightened security presence in the area.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and outspoken critic of government policies, is yet to respond to the police declaration as of the time of filing this report.
