OAU to Honour Staff Killed by Lion

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced plans to honour Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist who lost his life to a lion attack at the university zoo.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a workshop held at the university’s Department of Dramatic Arts.

The event, organised by the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), marked the first anniversary of Olawuyi’s death and focused on workplace safety.

Olawuyi died on February 19, 2024, while trying to save a junior colleague from a lion during feeding.

His bravery was praised by the university registrar, Mr. Adetunji Bakare, who assured that steps had been taken to improve workplace safety.

At the event, NAAT National President, Mr. Ibeji Nwokoma, urged the university to rename the zoo in Olawuyi’s memory.

Other speakers stressed the need for better safety measures in workplaces, calling for stricter enforcement of regulations and improved training.

The university reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safer environment for staff while remembering Olawuyi’s heroic act.
