The Nigerian Armed Forces (NAF) has rolled out a new code of conduct aimed at reinforcing discipline and aligning with the core values of the military.
According to Afripost, the revised regulations, known as the Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service (HAFCTCS), were officially signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on December 16, 2024. These new guidelines outline several prohibitions, including a ban on homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, and cross-dressing.
The regulations also forbid actions deemed unprofessional, such as body piercings, tattoos, public drunkenness, and disorderly behavior. Additionally, military officers are prohibited from engaging in LGBTQIA2S+ activities and cross-dressing. Romantic relationships between officers and their subordinates, or their subordinates’ spouses, are also banned to ensure the maintenance of professional boundaries.
The new code places a strong emphasis on financial responsibility, mandating personnel to ensure timely vehicle licensing and insurance payments. Violations, such as issuing bad cheques, are considered serious offenses.
Furthermore, the updated rules bar personnel from affiliating with secret societies or political parties, prohibiting any participation in such activities, even in an observatory capacity.
These measures are part of a broader initiative to strengthen professionalism and uphold ethical standards within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
