President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democratic values anchored on constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.
In a statement signed by the President, he said the country stands firmly as a democracy governed by the rule of law, which upholds the right of every citizen to practise their faith without fear or discrimination.
He emphasised that since the inception of his administration in 2023, there has been sustained engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders, aimed at promoting mutual understanding and addressing security challenges affecting citizens across different faiths and regions.
Tinubu dismissed the portrayal of Nigeria as a nation intolerant of religious diversity, saying such claims do not reflect the true reality of the country.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” he stated.
The President noted that religious freedom and tolerance have always been at the heart of Nigeria’s collective identity, assuring that his government would continue to uphold these principles.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,” he said.
Tinubu further stressed that the Constitution protects the rights of citizens of all faiths and that his administration remains dedicated to collaborating with the United States government and the international community to enhance understanding and cooperation in the protection of faith-based communities.
