The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind China’s newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), hailing it as a “timely and thoughtful contribution” to strengthening the international system.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria expressed appreciation to Beijing for unveiling the initiative during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting held in Tianjin, China, on September 1, 2025.
“The Global Governance Initiative represents a timely and thoughtful contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening the international system,” the statement read.
The GGI, launched ahead of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, builds upon China’s previous international frameworks — the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI).
The latest framework seeks to tackle critical global challenges, including climate change, digital inequality, emerging technologies, and representation in multilateral institutions. It also emphasizes adherence to international law and inclusivity in global governance.
Nigeria welcomed the initiative’s core emphasis on five foundational principles: sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centred governance, and results-oriented action.
“As one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria views the GGI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities, including reform of the United Nations, inclusive governance in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, and the promotion of equitable development,” the Foreign Ministry noted.
The statement added that the framework aligns with Nigeria’s own development goals, its policy of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 blueprint.
“Nigeria remains committed to working collaboratively with partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable and equitable global order,” the government stressed.
By backing the GGI, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order — one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples and upholds shared responsibility and mutual respect.
