NBA Moves To Assign Lawyers to Police Stations Nationwide

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has vowed to compel the Police Service Commission (PSC) to assign lawyers to police stations across the country to monitor the observance of human rights.

The National President of the NBA, Afam Osigwe (SAN), who made this known on Thursday, said the employment and assignment of legal practitioners to each of the 5000 police stations in Nigeria is in accordance with the provision of Section 66 of the Police Act, 2020.

Osigwe in a post on X said, “The NBA shall, as a matter of urgency, prevail on the Police Service Commission to employ and assign a legal practitioner to monitor the observance of human rights in each of the 5,000 police stations in Nigeria in accordance with section 66 of the Police Act, 2020.”

This comes amid continued human rights violations and brutality against suspects and innocent Nigerians across the country by men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Many civil society organisations had lamented how thousands of Nigerians are languishing in various police detention facilities where they are being detained and tortured, some for the crimes they know nothing about.

Just a few weeks ago, some minors detained by the Nigerian government in various police detention facilities in Abuja collapsed in Abuja Federal High Court during their arraignment for alleged treason because they participated in August 1-10 nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance tagged #EndBadGovernance protests.

Till date, many Nigerians, especially youths are still being detained and tortured by the police in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna and other states over #EndBadGovernance and October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Lol! Na format, unless is a loyal who is engrossed in human right activity or have passion for humanity.
Corrupt DPOs and Police officers will corrupt the lawyer and it will even be worst to enter Police Stations.
