Man Arrested for Defrauding FG Appointment Seeker of ₦300m

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a man, Adeola Badru, for allegedly defrauding a federal political appointment seeker, Joseph Olugbenga, of ₦300 million under the pretext of securing him a seat on the board of the South West Development Commission.

Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the arrest during a press briefing in Ilorin on Thursday, saying Badru is facing charges of criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretence.

According to police investigations, Badru reportedly approached Olugbenga in 2023, posing as a seasoned politician with access to top political figures. He allegedly collected ₦300 million from the victim in tranches, promising to facilitate his appointment.

After receiving the payments, the suspect fled to Ibadan, Oyo State, and cut off all communication with the victim. When Olugbenga realised he had been duped, he petitioned the Kwara Police Command in February 2023.

“The Criminal Investigation Department swung into action and traced the suspect to his hideout in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he was arrested. During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily admitted to the crime,” Ojo said.

Forged documents and other incriminating exhibits were recovered from the suspect. Police say Badru will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
