Lawyers in Imo State have taken a stand following the tragic killing of one of their colleagues, Chinedu Nwowu, by unknown assailants.
According to Politics Nigeria, in a show of solidarity and respect for the deceased, legal activities were temporarily suspended in three areas—Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma—on Thursday, January 24.
Nwowu, a well-known lawyer, was ambushed and fatally shot by gunmen in his hometown of Mgbidi on Wednesday, January 22. Sources indicate that the attackers intercepted his vehicle, shot him at close range, and fled the scene.
The shocking incident has stirred anger and fear among the legal community. The leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Orlu chapter responded by announcing a boycott of court sessions to mourn their colleague’s death.
A memo from Chukwuemeka Okoro, on behalf of the Orlu chapter of the NBA, confirmed that an emergency meeting would be held in Mgbidi at 10 am today. The memo stated that, as a result of the tragedy, the Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma High Courts would remain closed for the day.
The NBA expressed its firm stance on the issue, vowing to take further action following the emergency meeting to address the tragic loss of one of their own.
