Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has made it clear that the party will not participate in any coalition headed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Abure voiced this stance during an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Friday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
He expressed strong disapproval of efforts to form such an alliance, asserting that those pushing for it lack the necessary leadership qualities to make it viable.
“The Labour Party has no interest in joining any coalition for the 2027 elections. Our priority is to reorganize, rebuild, expand our base, and prepare to contest and win on our own terms,” Abure emphasized.
While key Labour Party figures, including 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, are reportedly involved in coalition discussions, Abure stressed that these individuals are acting independently and without the party’s endorsement.
“Anyone from our party involved in such talks does not represent the Labour Party. Those advocating for these coalitions are lacking the courage, competence, and character to lead. They’ve failed to properly manage their own parties, let alone lead a significant national movement,” Abure remarked.
The meeting also addressed concerns regarding Abia State Governor Alex Otti, citing alleged anti-party activities. A disciplinary committee was formed to investigate these claims and determine the next course of action.
Abure expressed his displeasure with Otti’s public criticisms of the party leadership, particularly his comments made on national television, which Abure views as violations of party discipline.
