A horrific accident along the Lokoja-Obajana road in Kogi State has resulted in the deaths of 19 people, among them five children, while eight others sustained injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident on Monday through the state Sector Commander, Kumar Tsukwam, who addressed journalists in Lokoja, the state capital.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on Sunday at Gadabiu, a community in Lokoja Local Government Area. Tsukwam explained that the collision involved a Toyota Hummer bus traveling toward Abuja and an oncoming articulated truck.
According to him, the bus was attempting to overtake another truck at high speed when it collided head-on with the trailer coming from the opposite direction.
“It was a terrible crash caused by reckless overtaking and speeding. The result was fatal — 19 people were burnt to death, including five children,” he said.
He noted that a total of 27 passengers were involved in the incident, with only eight managing to survive. The injured victims were reported to have suffered various degrees of trauma, including burns, fractures, and lacerations.
Rescue teams from both the FRSC and the police responded promptly, evacuating the survivors to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for immediate treatment.
Tsukwam used the opportunity to remind road users that highways are not meant for speeding, urging motorists to observe traffic laws to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.
“Drivers need to be more responsible. Speeding and wrongful overtaking continue to be major causes of accidents. Road safety begins with discipline and caution,” he emphasized.
