A tragic incident marred an illegal horse riding event in Kano State, resulting in the death of a well-known Islamic scholar and technology expert, Alaramma Jabir Lawan Abdullahi.
According to reports gathered by PUNCH Metro, Abdullahi was stabbed multiple times by suspected assailants during the celebration held on Saturday near the Gidan Sarki area.
The event, known locally as Kilisa, is traditionally a privilege of the royal family, but the Kano State Police confirmed the gathering was unauthorized.
Initial accounts suggested that Abdullahi was attacked by phone snatchers while traveling in a tricycle caught in traffic.
The assailants reportedly pretended to attempt a phone theft before fatally stabbing him and fleeing the scene.
However, Kano State Police spokesperson Haruna Abdullahi clarified in a phone interview on Monday that the killing was unrelated to any phone theft.
He explained that the incident took place during the illegal Kilisa horse riding event, which is often infiltrated by thugs and hoodlums.
“This celebration attracts criminal elements,” Abdullahi said. “It was during this event that the suspects approached the victim and stabbed him.”
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible.
Several suspects and four horses have been seized and are currently held in police custody.
In a similar tragic event in 2021, two elderly brothers, Inuwa Sani and Abdurrahman Sani, residents of Yakasai Quarters, lost their lives after being trampled by horses during another horse riding celebration in Kano.
