A major fire in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday night led to the destruction of 12 shops, with damages running into millions of naira.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out around 10:55 p.m. at Block A, No. 64, Mayegun Cement Store Market in the Araromi area of Agodi-Gate, and continued for over three hours before being extinguished.
Initial findings point to an electrical surge as the cause of the fire, which spread near flammable materials.
Yemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH. He shared that the service received a distress call at precisely 11:02 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Akinyinka explained that the fire service quickly mobilized a team led by Cfs Jimoh to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found several lockup shops ablaze and immediately worked to contain the fire, preventing it from reaching other shops.
Despite the significant damage to 12 shops, the fire service saved property worth billions of naira. The team returned to the station at 3:18 a.m. after ensuring the area was safe and remained on standby.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing as authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage.
