A fire broke out on the morning of Eid-el-Kabir at the popular phone market in Kano, also known as Farm Centre, destroying several shops and leaving traders in shock.
The incident happened while many shop owners were away celebrating the Muslim festival.
Thick smoke was seen rising from the market, drawing attention after a video was shared online by a concerned resident.
The flames quickly spread across a section of the market where mobile phones and accessories are sold.
Although the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, eyewitnesses said the damage was mostly in one part of the market where shops are closely packed together.
The situation caught many traders off guard, as they only got wind of the fire through videos and messages shared on social media.
At the time of this report, officials of the Kano State Fire Service had not issued any statement about what caused the fire or how much damage was done.
Efforts to reach the fire service spokesperson were not successful, as calls went unanswered.
Some traders said they stayed home for the Eid celebration and only returned to find parts of the market destroyed.
One of them, whose shop was near the affected area, said many stores opposite his own were burned down before help arrived.
The full extent of the loss remains unknown as many of the affected traders are still counting what they lost in the fire.
