The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the November 2023 Bayelsa election, Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, Benjamin Nathus, have officially resigned from the party. Their departure, announced on Thursday, December 12, was accompanied by the withdrawal of their supporters, including local government chairmen in the state.
In a letter addressed to the Labour Party chairman in Yenagoa and dated December 8, Eradiri explained that the decision to leave the party was driven by the need to join a political platform capable of delivering the leadership Bayelsa deserves.
Titled “Letter of Withdrawal as Labour Party Member,” Eradiri’s letter expressed gratitude to party members but highlighted internal challenges and leadership issues as reasons for his exit. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t navigate the intrigues and challenges embedded in the party leadership. We are currently consulting stakeholders to determine the next political party to join,” Eradiri stated. “Our goal is to align with a platform that will enable us to serve the people and move Bayelsa forward.”
Benjamin Nathus, in his resignation letter, also expressed appreciation for the Labour Party’s support during their time as candidates. He described the journey as one filled with valuable lessons and experiences.
“I am profoundly grateful for the support and camaraderie of party members who shared our vision for a thriving Bayelsa. The journey has provided invaluable insights and opportunities,” Nathus wrote.
The pair are expected to announce their next political move after completing consultations with key stakeholders.
