Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has requested the Senate to conduct its investigation into the alleged missing firearms behind closed doors, citing national security concerns.
According to NAN, In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Thursday’s plenary, Egbetokun commended the Senate’s commitment to a thorough probe while emphasizing the need for confidentiality.
“We appreciate the Senate committee’s efforts in investigating the alleged missing firearms,” he stated. “However, we urge that future hearings on sensitive security matters be held in camera to prevent misinformation and avoid creating unnecessary concerns among Nigerians and the international community.”
The IGP stressed that a closed-session approach would safeguard national security and allow for more candid discussions.
“Handling these matters discreetly will prevent the spread of misleading narratives and protect vital security interests,” he added.
Egbetokun reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to collaborating with the National Assembly to enhance security and drive positive reforms for Nigerians.
In response, Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the request, stating that the IGP’s concerns were well understood. He further noted that while the police would carry out their internal investigations, the Senate would also proceed with its independent inquiry.
