I was offered N5bn to impeach Fubara – Rivers Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff to the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Edison Ehie, has alleged that he was offered a staggering sum of N5 billion to orchestrate the impeachment of his principal.

Ehie made the revelation on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he claimed to have concrete evidence of the bribe offer saved on his mobile phone.

“I can also open my phone to show you, in the beginning of October 2023, when they approached me with a bribe of N5 billion. It is here in my phone.

“It was for impeachment. It’s here. I have it, and I have printed it and distributed it, in case, in their evil imagination, they decide to attack me. I already have a son and a brother,” he stated.

The former Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly disclosed that the bribery attempt occurred while he was still in his legislative role.

Reacting to allegations linking him to the October 30, 2023, bombing of the Rivers Assembly complex, Ehie dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

A former Head of Service in the state, George Nwaeke, had during a press conference last Friday accused Ehie of masterminding the attack on the directive of Governor Fubara.

Nwaeke further alleged that he personally witnessed a bag of money being handed over to Ehie at the Government House to execute the operation. However, he admitted that he was unaware of the exact amount contained in the bag.

Ehie’s revelations and counterclaims are expected to deepen the political crisis in Rivers State, which has been marred by allegations, counter-allegations, and power tussles within the state’s political structure.
