Uncertainty has gripped Rivers State as the whereabouts of Governor Siminalayi Fubara remain unknown following his reinstatement by President Bola Tinubu.
Arise Television correspondent in Rivers, Friday Olokor, who gave an update during the Morning Show programme, said the atmosphere in Port Harcourt remains calm despite political tension and speculations about Fubara’s possible return.
President Tinubu had suspended Fubara six months ago while declaring a state of emergency in Rivers. The president lifted the emergency rule on Wednesday, directing Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the state’s Sole Administrator, to hand over power to the governor.
In his farewell state-wide broadcast, Ibas urged Rivers residents to support Fubara as he resumes his constitutional duties. However, Olokor noted that the governor’s absence has created a leadership vacuum, leaving residents anxious for clarity.
“The atmosphere is cool, calm, and cozy, but the fact remains that the whereabouts of the governor is still unknown. There are speculations he may arrive today, but nothing is certain,” he said.
The state’s political divisions remain unresolved, with the Rivers House of Assembly still factionalized. According to Olokor, members of both factions are meeting separately to continue legislative duties, but the absence of the governor has deepened uncertainty.
Observers say the crisis has further burdened the people of Rivers, who have endured the brunt of prolonged political instability. There are renewed calls for reconciliation between the factions of the Assembly to avoid a repeat of past crises and to restore effective governance in the state.
