Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted passengers travelling in two commercial buses along the Itobe–Ajegwu–Anyigba highway in Kogi State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday near a security checkpoint between Ojiwo’-Ajengo and Mamereboh villages in Ofu Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers blocked the road using a trailer before intercepting two Toyota buses headed to Abuja. One of the buses, identified with registration number KG: KPA 622LG, was said to have departed from a motor park in Ankpa, Kogi East.
“All the passengers, including the drivers, were taken into the bush,” a resident of Achigili, Unubi Ademu, told reporters, noting that documents and belongings were found scattered at the scene.
Another resident, identified as Evangelist James, confirmed that security operatives, including soldiers, hunters, and local vigilantes, immediately launched a rescue operation.
“We saw men in military uniforms speeding through the village. We learnt that security teams are already trailing the kidnappers inside the bush,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, William Aya, did not respond to calls seeking clarification on the attack.
The incident adds to escalating kidnapping cases across the country, despite repeated assurances by the Federal Government to curb insecurity. Victims are often forced to pay large ransoms, and in some cases, abductees have been killed.
