The Federal Government has reacted to recent comments by the United States on religious freedom in Nigeria, reiterating its commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens regardless of faith or ethnicity.
In a statement issued on Saturday, November 1, 2025, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government said it remains steadfast in its fight against violent extremism and efforts by “special interests” to sow division in Nigeria and across the West African and Sahel regions.
“We remain committed in our resolve to tackle violent extremism fueled by special interests who have helped drive decay and division in countries across the intersecting West African and Sahel regions,” the statement read.
The ministry also paid tribute to victims of extremist violence and commended Nigeria’s armed forces “as they continue to fight against vicious but cowardly foes,” pledging continued protection for all citizens.
The government emphasized Nigeria’s long-standing culture of religious tolerance and diversity, aligning it with global democratic values.
“Like America, Nigeria has no option but to celebrate the diversity that is our greatest strength. Nigeria is a God-fearing country where we respect faith, tolerance, diversity and inclusion,” it stated.
The federal government also reaffirmed the country’s strategic partnership with the United States, expressing confidence that bilateral relations will remain strong.
“The U.S. has been — and we trust will always remain — a close ally,” the statement added, noting the Tinubu administration’s commitment to advancing peace, stability, and democracy in cooperation with international partners.
