Gunmen Impose N172m Levy on Zamfara Villages, Force Residents to Flee

A notorious bandit leader known as Danisuhu has reportedly imposed a N172.7 million levy on 25 villages in Tsafe West, Zamfara State, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes.

According to reports by Zagazola Makama, a publication focused on counterinsurgency efforts in the Lake Chad region, the gunmen issued additional demands for bags of soybeans, threatening violent attacks on those who fail to comply.

The affected villages and their levies include Gijinzama (N8.5 million), Gunja (N7 million), Kauyen Kane (N5 million), and Kunchin Kalgo (N20 million), among others.

Residents are reportedly abandoning their farmlands in fear of reprisals, with sources describing the situation as dire.

“The inability to pay these levies often results in brutal attacks, leaving residents with no option but to flee,” a local source said.

Although security has improved in Tsafe town and along the Funtua-Tsafe axis, rural areas remain vulnerable, Cable reports.

Residents are calling for increased security presence and emergency relief support for displaced families.
