A destructive fire has broken out at the Sokoto Kara Market, known for its grains, essential commodities, and timber.
The blaze, which began around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, continues to rage at the time of reporting.
Although the origin of the fire remains unclear, the local government has deployed emergency services to control the situation and prevent any casualties.
Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the flames, which have spread close to residential areas.
This fire is part of a troubling trend of frequent market fires in Sokoto, dating back to 2007.
Past incidents have led to significant damage in markets such as Sokoto Central, Old, Vegetable, and Gawon Nama Markets, with losses running into millions of naira.
Despite efforts by successive governments, including those of Attahiru Bafarawa, Aliyu Wamakko, Aminu Tambuwal, and the current governor, Ahmed Aliyu, the recurring fires continue to cause hardship.
The Sokoto Central Market, which had over 5,000 shops, is still under construction after a devastating blaze in 2021.
Authorities are committed to rebuilding these markets and providing support to the victims.
