The federal government is investigating an incident involving victims of a road accident who were allegedly ignored by medical staff after being taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja.
The victims were brought to the hospital by a passerby who recorded a video that quickly spread across social media platforms.
The video showed the victims lying unattended as the person who brought them pleaded for help.
According to the video, one hospital worker claimed they could not attend to the injured people due to a lack of gloves.
However, later footage revealed that some medical staff eventually assisted one of the badly injured victims into the emergency ward, while others struggled to walk in by themselves.
The incident has sparked widespread anger online, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over how emergency cases are handled in public hospitals.
Several users questioned why such delays still occur in life-threatening situations.
In response to the backlash, FMC Jabi released a statement saying it had begun an internal probe.
According to the hospital, an early review showed that gloves and other emergency supplies were available at the time of the incident.
The hospital management said it was still speaking with staff members and other parties involved to understand what went wrong.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, has ordered a full investigation.
The hospital promised that the final report will be made public once the process is completed.
Management also assured the public of their commitment to quality care and said they have systems in place for patients and families to give feedback or report issues.
The hospital mentioned that it handles serious procedures like kidney transplants and open-heart surgeries and supports poor patients through a fund that helps with medical bills.
They stated that they have successfully treated unconscious patients in the past and returned them safely to their families with help from social workers.
