A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced a TikTok content creator, Abubakar Ibrahim, popularly known as ‘G-Fresh’, and a musician, Hamisu Sa’id Yusuf, also known as ‘Hamisu Breaker’, to five months imprisonment each for abusing the Nigerian currency.
Justice S.M. Shuaibu handed down the judgment after the two defendants pleaded guilty to separate one-count charges filed against them by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The offences, which contravene Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, involved the spraying and trampling of naira notes during social events in Kano and Jigawa States, respectively.
According to the EFCC, Abubakar Ibrahim, in November 2024, was caught on video spraying and stepping on ₦1,000 notes totaling ₦14,000 while dancing at Rahma Sa’idu’s shop in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.
Similarly, Hamisu Breaker was accused of spraying ₦30,000 in ₦200 denominations during a social occasion in Hadejia, Jigawa State, also in November 2024.
Upon arraignment, both individuals admitted guilt. The prosecution counsel, Zarami Mohammed, presented evidence to support the charges, after which Justice Shuaibu convicted and sentenced them accordingly.
While the court imposed a five-month jail term on each of the convicts, it offered an option of a ₦200,000 fine.
The EFCC reiterated that the convictions serve as a reminder that abuse of the naira, including spraying, selling, or mutilating the currency, remains a punishable offence under Nigerian law.
