Maryam Abacha, widow of Nigeria’s former military ruler General Sani Abacha, recently spoke out against long-held accusations that her late husband took billions of dollars from public funds and kept them in foreign accounts.
She said no clear evidence has ever been presented to prove that he moved money abroad during his time as head of state.
In an interview, she asked for concrete proof and questioned who could confirm such claims.
She also mentioned that money her husband reportedly held for Nigeria disappeared soon after his death, suggesting it might have been lost or misused by later leaders.
This raised doubts about the focus on her husband’s alleged wrongdoing.
Maryam Abacha also raised questions about why some people continue to blame her husband, hinting that such accusations might be influenced by divisions among Nigerians based on ethnicity or religion.
She called for Nigerians to be kinder to one another and to stop spreading false stories. She urged the media to inform the public fairly instead of damaging reputations.
Regarding Nigeria’s economy while her husband was in power, she pointed out that foreign reserves increased and external debt decreased.
She challenged critics to show real evidence of any theft. Maryam Abacha reminded Nigerians that no single individual controls the country alone and that everyone, regardless of status, should be respected.
She expressed hope that people would stop holding onto old grievances and work together for the nation’s good.
