FG Cancels Planned Prayer Sessions for Food Security

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has cancelled its earlier plan to hold weekly prayer and fasting sessions aimed at improving food supply across Nigeria.

The decision to suspend the programme came just days after a circular dated June 11 directed top ministry staff to participate in a three-day spiritual exercise at the ministry’s Abuja headquarters.

The event was to be held on June 16, 23, and 30, and all staff members were expected to fast and pray for divine help to achieve food security.

The plan was met with strong public criticism, especially on social media, where many Nigerians questioned the decision to rely on spiritual efforts while food prices continue to rise and hunger deepens nationwide.

People called for practical government action, such as better support for farmers and improvements in food production and distribution.

Although no reason was given in the follow-up message announcing the suspension, the ministry has now put the prayer programme on hold.

Many Nigerians have continued to call for focused agricultural reforms rather than spiritual gatherings.
