Former Chief Press Secretary to ex-INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Rotimi Oyekanmi, has dismissed reports claiming that staff of the commission sang a dirge during Yakubu’s farewell ceremony.
Oyekanmi said the reports were false and a deliberate act of misinformation aimed at tarnishing the image of the former chairman. He clarified that the staff actually sang songs of praise to appreciate Yakubu’s leadership and achievements during his tenure.
According to him, Yakubu’s reforms in the commission led to improved staff welfare, promotions, and capacity development, earning him the respect of workers across all levels.
Oyekanmi criticised the media platform that published the report, describing it as a group of “haters masquerading as journalists” spreading disinformation. He urged the management of the platform to caution those using it to spread lies against individuals and institutions.
Yakubu officially bowed out as INEC Chairman on Tuesday, handing over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as acting chairman. He said his decision was to allow a smooth transition and enable his successor to focus on upcoming electoral activities.
