Lagos warns developers over illegal buildings at Trade Fair Complex

By Charles Maduka

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its zero tolerance for illegal and unapproved buildings within the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, warning that such structures endanger public safety.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, stated that the ongoing enforcement was guided by law and backed by a 2003 Supreme Court judgment empowering states to regulate physical developments within their territories.

Olumide explained that the exercise was not about land ownership but about ensuring that all developers and occupants possess valid planning permits. He gave a two-week deadline for property owners within the complex to regularise their building approvals with the ministry.

Responding to claims that the demolitions targeted a particular ethnic group, the commissioner dismissed the allegation, describing it as false and politically motivated. He noted that similar actions had been carried out in other parts of the state, including Pelewura Market, Bombata, Ilasan Estate, Otumara, Alaba Rago, and Oluwole Market, which were occupied by diverse ethnic groups.

Olumide urged residents and stakeholders to support the government’s efforts to ensure a safe, well-planned, and sustainable environment for all.
