The Academic Staff Union of Universities has dismissed the Federal Government’s last-minute plea to halt its planned warning strike, saying the intervention came too late.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, said during an interview on Channels Television that the government had been slow in addressing the union’s long-standing demands.
He recalled that the union had given the government three weeks to act after a meeting in Sokoto but received no response until the ultimatum elapsed.
According to Piwuna, the government only reached out two working days before the planned strike, appealing for suspension. He said such a move showed a lack of seriousness in dealing with critical issues affecting the education sector.
He noted that the government’s failure to finalise the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement and other unresolved matters had forced the union to proceed with its two-week warning strike, expected to begin on October 13.
Piwuna added that the union might reconsider its decision only if the government provides substantial progress within the next 48 hours.
