Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retired), has urged the Nigerian government to begin military training for all citizens, starting with those taking part in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He made this call on Friday during the 50th anniversary event of the Nigerian Defence Academy Regular Course 18 Alumni Association in Abuja.
According to him, such training could help promote unity, discipline, and resilience among Nigerians, especially in the face of growing insecurity and social problems.
Ihejirika, while reflecting on his career in the military, said that the training and values he gained helped shape his journey and contributed to his success.
He believes introducing military training during NYSC would help raise a generation of Nigerians who are more patriotic and willing to take responsibility.
He also supported the government’s decision to bring back the old national anthem, saying it reminds Nigerians of unity and service.
He added that the anthem should be used more often and not just during official events. He wants it to return to schools and be part of everyday national life.
Ihejirika shared how his early life in Abia State and his journey through the military gave him the discipline and direction that led him to become the 22nd Chief of Army Staff.
He also praised the current Armed Forces leadership, noting that many of them have gained valuable experience from missions in conflict areas such as Liberia and Sierra Leone.
He ended his message by urging Nigerian leaders to always work for peace, stressing that without unity, no position or title can last.
The event had in attendance top military officials, including the Minister of State for Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff.
