A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has sentenced the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment on counts 1, 4 and 6 in the terrorism charges filed against him.
For count 3, the court imposed a 20-year imprisonment term, while count 7 attracted a five-year jail sentence.
In his ruling, Justice Omotosho stated that the court was being merciful by not imposing the death sentence on Kanu despite the consequences of his actions in the South-East.
He added that the international community frowns at the imposition of life sentences but maintained that the punishment was appropriate under the circumstances.
The judge also banned Kanu from accessing any digital gadget and if possible, should be under the watch of security agencies.
He stated that the unruly behaviour of Kanu in the courtroom in the morning, shows he’s not remorseful to the acts committed.
The Judge ruled that a correctional facility befitting should be provided for him.
