Gunmen on Friday killed Professor Emeka Chukwuma, a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka.
The incident occurred in his hometown, Umueji, located in Asaba, the state capital.
Sources reported that Chukwuma, aged 56, had arrived in Asaba for his routine weekend visit when he was killed at his residence in the St. Bridges area of the Umueji quarter.
The professor was known to travel to Asaba every weekend, and it was during his visit this particular Friday that the tragic event unfolded.
According to witnesses, the gunmen ambushed him at his home, leading to his death.
In the wake of this incident, there has been growing concern among residents of Asaba over the increasing insecurity in the area.
Many locals have raised alarms over a string of violent crimes, including kidnappings and killings, that have rocked the city in recent weeks.
This has sparked public outcry, with calls for stronger action from the security agencies to ensure the safety of residents.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the murder, stating that the police are actively investigating the case, Punch reports.
“Yes, it is confirmed. The matter has been reported to the police, and we are working on arresting those responsible,” Edafe said.
Residents are left shaken by the crime, as they continue to call for better protection and security measures in the region.
