A video showing French President Emmanuel Macron being unexpectedly struck by his wife, Brigitte Macron, has taken social media by storm.
The moment occurred on board the presidential aircraft shortly before touching down in Vietnam, where President Macron was scheduled to begin a diplomatic tour across Southeast Asia.
In the footage, the president is seen chatting with Brigitte near the aircraft’s exit when she suddenly swings her hand toward his face, seemingly hitting him on the mouth.
Though caught off guard, Macron quickly regains his composure and waves to the press waiting outside.
As they disembark, the president offers his arm to his wife, which she declines, choosing instead to hold the handrail while descending the stairs.
Initially, the Élysée Palace denied the authenticity of the video, but later admitted it was real.
A source close to the couple described the moment as nothing more than lighthearted interaction, saying, “It was simply a playful gesture — not something to fuel unnecessary speculation.”
Nonetheless, the video has ignited a flurry of public reactions and debate, especially given the couple’s long-discussed personal history.
Brigitte, who is 25 years older than Emmanuel Macron and was once his schoolteacher, has long been a subject of media attention in France and beyond.
While French officials attempt to downplay the incident, critics say the episode raises fresh questions about the nature of the couple’s relationship and its portrayal in public.
