Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, have arrived in London to coordinate the return of the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.
The top-level delegation, acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, touched down in the United Kingdom on Monday morning. Their mission is to oversee the repatriation process and ensure that all arrangements are made for the former leader’s burial in Nigeria.
Upon arrival, the delegation was received by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and other senior officials already on ground.
President Tinubu had earlier expressed deep grief over Buhari’s death, ordering all national flags to be flown at half-mast in mourning. He also extended condolences to the late president’s family and the people of Katsina State.
Buhari, who hailed from Daura, Katsina State, died at the age of 81 in a London hospital around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He served as Nigeria’s civilian president between 2015 and 2023, following an earlier stint as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
Preparations for his return and final rites are underway.
