Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially severed ties with the opposition party.
The announcement was contained in a resignation letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of his PDP ward in Jada 1, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The letter was shared online by one of his media aides on Wednesday.
Atiku’s resignation comes amid growing speculation surrounding his involvement in forming a new political alliance known as the Alliance Democratic Congress, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the letter, Atiku acknowledged the key roles the PDP had played in his political career, including his two-term tenure as Nigeria’s Vice President and two-time emergence as the party’s presidential candidate. However, he explained that the party had departed from the founding principles that once united its members.
“Leaving the PDP is not an easy decision for me, especially as a founding member. But the current direction of the party no longer reflects the ideals we once stood for,” the letter read in part.
He extended his gratitude to party members and leaders for their past support and wished them well going forward.
