The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced that residents in Gombe State, Abuja, and 17 other states in the northern region should prepare for intense heat beginning Saturday, April 12.
The warning follows the end of recent rainfall, with forecasts indicating that temperatures could climb as high as 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
According to the latest weather update shared by NiMet through its office in Gombe, the expected rise in temperature is likely to cause discomfort due to clear skies and lingering moisture in the air.
The agency noted that this combination will make the heat feel more severe across the affected states, which include Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory.
NiMet has advised people living in these states to take early steps to protect their health.
Residents are being encouraged to reduce time spent under direct sunlight, especially between noon and 3 pm when the sun is strongest.
People are also urged to stay indoors or seek shaded areas, drink a lot of water, and wear light, breathable clothes to stay cool.
The elderly, children, and those with health challenges are particularly at risk and may need extra care during this period.
Authorities have also been asked to raise more public awareness to help communities understand the risks linked to extreme heat and how to stay safe.
