Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri, has begun his annual leave and handed over the duties of governance to his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The governor made the announcement via his X handle on Sunday, stating that his leave will take effect from November 25, 2024. Diri acknowledged that it had been a busy year since his second-term inauguration in February but assured Bayelsans that his absence would not disrupt the state’s governance.
In his statement, Governor Diri emphasized that Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo is now fully in charge of all state functions during his leave. He further reassured the public that ongoing projects and programs across various ministries and agencies would continue without delay.
On the issue of the ongoing power blackout in the state, Governor Diri highlighted the progress made in repairing the vandalized Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV power line. While the transmission line is not the state’s responsibility, he explained that the intervention was done in the interest of the people. Diri expressed hope that power would soon be restored as repairs continue, including the replacement of damaged components.
He also mentioned that security forces are securing repair sites in Rivers State, where the vandalism occurred, and shared plans for the state to develop its own Independent Power Plant to ensure steady electricity supply.
Governor Diri concluded by wishing Bayelsans a great week and reassured them of his commitment to the state’s development as he officially proceeds on his leave.
